Hotels, Hostel & Transportation Information

NYC Metro System Subway/Buses
There is a trip planner here as well as information about all three major airports. For those who do not want to take the train or bus there is also Airlink (Barbara's recommendation) call toll free: 877-599-8200 to make reservations. It may be the most economical and convenient way (door to door) to come into NYC. A yellow cab would cost between $20.00 and $35.00 plus tolls depending on where the individual is staying.  If flying into Newark, NJ a cab will run about $60.00 - $70.00 plus tolls into the city, so Airlink is highly recomended.

7 Day Pass
A single ride on the MTA is $2. Coming to and from the workshop is 12 rides for a total of $24. This one week unlimited pass is $24 and is good on all local buses and subways. This is not good for the $5 Airtrain ride to and from JFK.

Cheap Airfare Only
I have found Kayak.com to be the best place to look. But of course there is Travelocity, Expedia, Orbitz, etc.

Cheap Airfare and Hotel
Again, I have found buying airfare and hotel as a combo does sometimes save money. Travelocity, Expedia, Orbitz, etc.

You should try and concentrate on locations on the East or West side of Manhattan between 96th & 14th streets. If looking on the West Side, do not go further West than 8th Avenue. This will narrow the search to locations convenient to transportation or even walking distance to Marymount Manhattan College.

Priceline.com & Cheaphotels.com
This may seem overwhelming to the novice city visitor but it may be the best way to get a good price, location, and comfort.  There were prices around $150 per night for a single in a “cheap” hotel.  And many of these can be shared for no extra costs. For Hostels, the rates also have a range from $20-$100 per night.  Locations between 96th and 14th streets will all be good bustling neighborhoods full of services and restaurants.

If you stay at a "real' hotel they MAY have transportation to and from LGA & JFK. LGA you can use the 7 day pass but for JFK there is an additional fee of $5 each way for the Airlink train.

Cheap, cheap places to stay
Google: Hostels in New York City. I will be listing one hostel below that is within 25 -30 minute walk to Marymount Manhattan College. For brisk walkers less than that. Near the hostel there is also a bus that is a straight shot from hostel to Marymount Manhattan College.

*If you want me to share your name with other participants looking for roommates please let me know by email at dialectsandvoice@yahoo.com*

These are all about a 15 to 25 block walk(25 - 30 minutes, brisk walkers less) to Marymount Manhattan College.  The locations are also great for access to and from either La Guardia or JFK Airports.

The rates quoted for the following locations do not include the taxes. These prices are direct quotes from calling the hotels. It may be possible to go on Priceline.com or Cheaphotels.com and get better rates for the very same hotels.

Marriot Courtyard Hotel:  410 East 92nd Street.  800-771-LOOK.  Prices began at $279 per night for either one person or a share.  The rate didn’t change.

The Franklin:  164 East 87th Street. 800-607-4009.  The rooms are very small and rates begin at $299.  The room can be shared for the same price but it will be “tight” fit.

Hostel:  The Wanderers Inn:  179 East 94th Street, 212-289-8083. Guest must have valid Passport. Even Americans – no exceptions.   Below is lots of information on this Hostel. But know there are Hostels all over New York City this is just the one most convenient to the workshop.

The Wanderers Inn is located in the exclusive Upper East Side of Manhattan between Lexington and Third Avenues on 94th Street. The location makes this hostel the closest to the famous Museum Mile of New York. In this area you will find The Metropolitan Museum, The Solomon Guggenheim Museum, the Whitney Museum and The International Center of Photography among many other attractions. Walk three blocks East and you will reach Central Park. The closest subway station is only two blocks away, on Lexington Ave. The area is also served by many buses. Although the hostel block is very quiet, you can find many services on Lexington and Third Avenues, such as a post office, a 24 hour pharmacy and supermarket, a police station, several banks with ATM machines, and various types of food available in the neighborhood's numerous restaurants and bars.

This hostel is owned and operated by the General Manager of the Chelsea International Hostel, offering an excellent option for visitors to stay on the Upper East Side.
