The College of William and Mary, one of the nation's premier state-assisted liberal arts universities, is included among the nation's prestigious "Public Ivy's," and ranked first among state institutions in terms of commitment to teaching. Founded in 1693 by Royal Charter from King William III and Queen Mary II of Great Britain, the college is the second oldest educational institution in the U.S. and is alma mater to four Presidents of the United States: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe and John Tyler. The College of William and Mary has an enrollment of 7,650 of whom approximately 5, 700 are undergraduates.
The 1,200 acre campus includes picturesque Lake Matoaka and the College of Woods. The "Old Campus" section, restored to 18th-century appearance, is adjacent to the historic area Colonial Williamsburg.
Williamsburg is approximately 150 miles south of Washington, D.C., midway between Richmond and Norfolk, Virginia.
William and Mary boasts one of the oldest and most reputable theatre programs in the United Stated. In 1702 a group of our students presented a Latin "pastoral colloquy" for the Royal Governor, the first record of a theatrical performance in America. The first theatre in America was constructed in Williamsburg in 1716, and in 1736 William and Mary students presented America's first recorded college production of a play - Addison's Cato.
